You home is your haven and your pride. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to keep it clean and beautiful. But you may have seen many pictures of beautiful houses online and wondered what you can do to transform your own house so that you can get the same look. There are so many ways you can decorate your home and brighten up the atmosphere.

White or light coloured furniture can add a lot of brightness to your home. Think of white bookcases, white tables and cream coloured sofas. This is even better if you have dark wood floors. The contrast of light and dark would really uplift the room. You can also use white throw rugs on a dark wood floor. You can even repaint old furniture so that you can get them to look different and new. Make sure that sufficient light comes from the windows into your home. If there are tall bookshelves, plants or furniture obstructing the path of light, you should move them away from the window. A space naturally lit by daylight can look welcoming and you will feel a sense of peace within.

You can add small touches here and there to your home such as adding cotton dinner napkins and bright patches of colour in the way of coloured picture frames, small plants and tiny glinting ornaments that catch the light. But you have to make sure that you don’t invite clutter by adding so many things to your house. The trick is to maintain balance. If you have little space in your home, you can use mirrors to make it appear larger to great effect. Position them carefully with windows so that they help in reflecting the light and brightening up the room even more. You can brighten up a dark room by adding a mirror to the space. And of course, you can always paint a darker room in a lighter colour to give it a feeling of space and freedom. You have to remember that lighter colours go well in common areas such as living rooms and dining rooms but you can use darker colours in bedrooms to create an intimate space. You can also add a bit of drama and accent a darkly painted room by colouring a wall or two with a different lighter colour. Make sure it complements the dark colour. This can be achieved with a small amount of paint. An essential thing is to clean your house regularly. Make sure that there’s no dust on the surfaces and no marks on the walls. A clean and well organised room can look quite spacious.
